AMAYA AUSTIN
Amaya Austin is a video journalist and documentarian from Santa Fe, Texas, who strives to tell real, in-depth stories through visual mediums. Her work is driven by honest and sensitive reporting—always putting humanity first. She currently lives in New York City, where she’s a Video Journalist Intern on Dow Jones’ Wealth & Investing team.
At Dow Jones, Amaya helps produce MarketWatch’s video content by scripting and editing both weekly news segments and long-form series. She contributes to interviews with CEOs and industry leaders and supports efforts to make financial journalism more accessible and engaging.
Previously, she interned with KUT and KUTX, Austin’s NPR stations, and served as Video Editor at The Daily Texan, where she led a 25-person team and developed systems to strengthen collaboration across the newsroom.
Her recent documentary, Ten Hours, explores the aftermath of the Santa Fe school shooting and the nearly seven-year fight by victims’ families for a public memorial. After months of trust-building, Amaya was able to tell this story alongside grieving mothers who, in their words, called her “the best journalist they’ve ever worked with.” That relationship—and the responsibility to tell stories with care—continues to guide her work.
Amaya creates documentaries and visual stories with an ethical lens, focusing on community, resilience, and the power of human-centered journalism.
Why Journalism?
Amaya was at Santa Fe High School, when 8 students and 2 teachers lost their lives in a school shooting . The news media bombarded Amaya’s classmates, in their most vulnerable moment, to get any ounce of information. The Santa Fe community has always resented the media for this reason, and Amaya did as well. Once she began pursuing journalism, she vowed to always prioritize sensitive reporting and humanity in her work. As a visual journalist, Amaya believes documenting real people, communities and honest stories is crucial work, but must be approached with respect.
