AMAYA AUSTIN

Amaya Austin, a documentarian with East Austin Stories, Buscar Films and UT Austin, strives to showcase real and in-depth stories through visual mediums. Her work is fueled by her honest and sensitive reporting abilities - putting humanity first. Amaya currently resides in Austin, Texas and covers UT Austin and city news.

Amaya has worked with KUT News, an Austin based NPR station, and KUTX Music Radio as a Multimedia Intern. There, she captured photographs of timely new stories, such as overcrowding animal shelters during extreme summer temperatures and the opening of a new college center introducing children to in-demand careers. Amaya also served as the Video Editor at The Daily Texan, managing a team of 25 videographers while producing various visual news stories. As an editor, she has helped create a publication-wide system to promote department collaborations and provide more accessible content to news consumers.

Now, Amaya spends most of her time creating visual stories and short documentaries covering Austin-wide and UT Austin news. All while reporting in an ethical nature and continuing the conversation of human reporting in newsrooms.

Why Journalism?

Amaya was at Santa Fe High School, when 8 students and 2 substitute teachers lost their lives in a school shooting . The news media bombarded Amaya’s classmates, in their most vulnerable moment, to get any ounce of information. The Santa Fe community has always resented the media for this reason, and Amaya did as well. Once she began pursuing journalism, she vowed to always prioritize sensitive reporting and humanity in her work. As a visual journalist, Amaya believes documenting real people, communities and honest stories is crucial work, but must be approached with respect.
